Case Study: Application of Pedestrian Turnstiles in a Cambodian Enterprise Canteen
1. Project Background

The client is a well-known manufacturing enterprise in Cambodia with a workforce of over 1,200 employees. Its in-house canteen provides daily dining services for all staff. As the enterprise grew, the canteen gradually faced significant challenges in dining management:

  • Chaotic Personnel Management: During peak dining hours, personnel of different identities—including employees, external visitors, and construction workers—mixed together when entering the canteen. Canteen staff struggled to quickly verify identities, leading to non-eligible individuals occupying dining resources. This also posed potential risks to the enterprise’s internal security.
  • Low Dining Efficiency: Traditional manual registration and card-swiping methods caused severe queues during peak hours. On average, each employee spent 5–8 minutes waiting to enter the canteen, which not only compromised the dining experience but also resulted in some employees missing the optimal dining time due to long waits.
  • Lack of Data Statistics: The enterprise could not accurately track key data such as daily dining numbers by time period or dining patterns across different departments. This left the canteen without a scientific basis for ingredient procurement and meal quantity planning, often leading to either food waste or insufficient meal supply.

To address these pain points, the enterprise conducted extensive research and comparisons, ultimately choosing to cooperate with our company to introduce a pedestrian turnstile system and upgrade the canteen’s dining management to an intelligent level.

2. Product Selection

Based on Cambodia’s local climate, the canteen’s usage scenarios, and the enterprise’s specific needs, our company tailored a pedestrian turnstile solution for this project. The details of the selected product and its advantages are as follows:

Product Model: IM.B203 Swing Gate Turnstile
Core Advantage Description
Excellent Weather Resistance

Cambodia has a tropical monsoon climate, characterized by high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and high humidity. The turnstile features

a 304 stainless steel body with multi-layer anti-corrosion and anti-rust treatments, effectively resisting equipment erosion from harsh

climatic conditions. It ensures long-term stable operation, with a service life of 8–10 years.

Fast Passage

The swing gate has a rapid opening speed (response time of only 0.3 seconds) and an adjustable passage width (maximum 1,200mm),

meeting the demand for fast employee entry. Tests show that a single turnstile can handle 35–40 people per minute during peak hours,

significantly reducing waiting times.

Multi-identity Recognition

It supports multiple verification methods, including IC card, ID card, and facial recognition. The enterprise can set different access

permissions based on personnel type: for example, employees use dual authentication (IC card + facial recognition), while visitors need

to register to obtain a temporary access code. This effectively prevents unauthorized entry.

Data Linkage

The turnstile system can integrate with the enterprise’s employee management system and canteen meal management system. It

real-time tracks dining data (e.g., daily dining numbers, department-specific dining counts, and peak dining periods) and generates

data reports. These insights provide precise support for ingredient procurement and meal menu adjustments, reducing food waste.

3. Project Implementation
On-Site Survey and Planning

Before the project launch, our company dispatched a professional technical team to the Cambodian enterprise’s canteen for an on-site survey. Based on factors such as the canteen’s entrance/exit dimensions, pedestrian flow direction, and existing facility layout, a detailed turnstile installation plan was developed. Two swing gates were installed at each of the canteen’s 2 main entrances, creating 4 passageways to handle peak-hour pedestrian flow.

Equipment Transportation and Installation

Considering the uniqueness of cross-border transportation, our company collaborated with a professional logistics provider in advance to develop a comprehensive equipment transportation plan, ensuring no damage during transit. After the equipment arrived on-site, the technical team completed the installation and commissioning of all turnstiles within 3 days in accordance with the plan. To minimize disruption to the canteen’s normal operations, construction was carried out during non-dining hours.

Personnel Training and System Integration

After equipment installation and commissioning, our technical team provided training to the canteen management staff and employees, covering topics such as daily operation of the turnstiles, access permission settings, data report viewing, and basic troubleshooting. This ensured that relevant personnel could operate the system proficiently. Meanwhile, technicians worked with the enterprise’s IT department to integrate the turnstile system with the employee management system and canteen meal management system, ensuring real-time data synchronization.

4. Application Results
More Standardized Personnel Management

Through multi-identity recognition and access control, unauthorized entry to the canteen was effectively prevented. The identities of diners are now clear, order has significantly improved, and the enterprise’s internal security has been further enhanced.

Significantly Improved Dining Efficiency

During peak hours, the average waiting time for employees to enter the canteen was reduced from 5–8 minutes to 1–2 minutes, greatly improving the dining experience. A satisfaction survey showed that employee satisfaction with dining efficiency rose from 62% (before implementation) to 95%.

More Precise Cost Control

Leveraging accurate dining data from the turnstile system, the canteen optimized ingredient procurement. Food waste dropped from 15% to less than 5%, reducing monthly ingredient procurement costs by approximately USD 12,000. Additionally, labor costs were cut: 4 staff members were previously required for registration and guidance, but now only 2 are needed.

More Scientific Management Decisions

Data reports generated by the system provided clear insights into employee dining habits—for example, some employees prefer light meals, and dining numbers are higher on Wednesdays and Fridays. The canteen adjusted its menu and meal quantities accordingly, increasing employee satisfaction with meals from 70% to 92% and significantly boosting employee well-being.

5. Client Feedback

The Administrative Manager of the Cambodian enterprise stated: “Since introducing your pedestrian turnstile system, the canteen’s management challenges have been completely resolved. Employee dining efficiency has improved significantly, food waste has decreased noticeably, and management costs have been reduced. The system operates stably, and after-sales service is prompt. We are very satisfied with this cooperation and plan to introduce your pedestrian turnstile products to other areas of the enterprise (such as office building entrances) in the future.”
